The Amalfi Coast (& More)
November 1-6
Minori – Our home base for four days on the Amalfi Coast will be Minori, a charming seaside town of about 2,700 people. Situated midway along the incredibly beautiful Amalfi Coast, Minori is the perfect launch point for our visits of the surrounding areas. (Minori is still off the American radar screen and retains its fresh, friendly, and authentic atmosphere.)
Ravello* – Ravello is arguably the most spell-bindingly exotic town on the entire Amalfi Coast. You’ll love the melding of European-medieval and Arabic cultures displayed in the architecture of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. And both villas have beautiful gardens from which you’ll enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast and the sparkling Mediterranean below.
Pompeii* – A short ride from the Amalfi Coast, we'll visit Pompeii, the most famous archeological site of the ancient Roman world. We’ll visit the ancient forum, with its temples, law court, and food market. We’ll also visit homes of the wealthy; the quarters where the slaves slept and worshipped their own gods; public baths; and much more.
La Reggia di Caserta* – The Reggia di Caserta is the Bourbon Royal Palace at Caserta (just outside of Naples). This 18th-century marvel was built to rival Versailles Palace. Though we can't visit each one of its 1,200 rooms, the ones you will see are as exquisite as they are extravagant. The complex at Caserta is exceptional for the way in which it brings together a magnificent palace with its park, gardens, ponds, water falls, and monumental outdoor sculpture.

Some Free-Time Suggestions
- Positano & Amalfi – A relaxing change of pace – a very informal, relaxing, awe-inspiring ferry trip along the Costiera Amalfitana. Down at the Minori dock you can catch a ferry for an incredibly picturesque ride along the coast. You can hop off at historic Amalfi and/or at colorful Positano to explore a bit and maybe relax in a local bar with an icy limoncello or a tasty, refreshing gelato as you watch the world go by.
- The Path of the Gods – If you enjoy hiking, you'll love Il Sentiero Degli Dei (The Path of the Gods) above the Amalfi Coast. It sweeps through olive groves and vineyard covered terraces with magnificent expanses of blue sky above and wine-dark sea below. As you trek, you’ll see the jagged Amalfi Coast dotted with the colorful tiled domes in the towns below. (You can do this on your own, or we’ll be glad to help arrange a guide for you.)

Heading Further South
November 6-10
Paestum* – Heading south from the Amalfi Coast, we’ll visit ancient Paestum, site of three of the world's best preserved ancient Greek temples. We’ll have a tour of the archeological site and its small, but excellent, museum. We’ll pause for a casual lunch, and we strongly suggest you try the Insalata Caprese – out-of-this-world mozzarella cheese, Marzano tomatoes, etc. – all of it locally produced.
Matera* – Matera is one of the most unusual towns anywhere in the world. Located in Italy’s Basilicata region, the town dates back two millennia, having evolved from a troglodyte settlement that originated in the 10th millennium B.C.E. (the Paleolithic Age). The rock-cut urban core of Matera is known as the "Sassi di Matera". (The “Sassi” are the habitations dug into the calcareous rock originating in the troglodyte settlement and now thought to be among the first ever human settlements in what is now Italy).
Alberobello* – Alberobello is a must visit in the Apulia region. The town is characterized by its trulli, small dwellings built of dry stone and with unique conical roofs. It’s believed that these buildings were first constructed back in the mid-14th century. They were originally used as shelters, storage huts, and homes; today they’re mostly homes and shops. You’ll enjoy a leisurely visit here and spending a night in a trulli hotel.

Dan – Let me just say that the #1 thing that made all the other wonderful times come true was your first-class planning for the trip. [We] did things that nobody else can ever do... Thanks, Dan. It was a dream come true...
